The Natchitoches Parish School Board received funds from
the Louisiana Department of Education to implement the
Coordinated School Health Program. Our very own, Nationally
Certified School Nurse, Mrs. Tina Johnson, helped to write the
initial grant that was awarded to the school in 2006. (see above)
The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a program
that recognizes the link between health and learning. The major
components are: School Environment, Health Education, School
Meals and Nutrition, Physical Education, Health Services,
Counseling and Mental Health Services, Staff Wellness, and Parent Community/Partnerships.
The NPSB chose our site, PEMS, as the pilot site because of
behavioral and academic concerns. It was decided to implement
the Mental Health component first because of the need of a
full-time Social Worker that could assist with case management
and counseling services. See above, Program Director and
Social Worker, Miss. Leona Latchie and Case Manager,
Miss. Jennifer Gray, who are responsible for providing services
to various students at PEMS under the Coordinated School
Health Program.

surface behavior and to facilitate long term behavior change
within a school.

behavior expectations.

Goals of the Coordinated School Health Program:
1) Increase capacity to serve students with behavioral health
needs, 2) Decrease the number of students identified as disabled
due to mental health concerns, 3) Reduce the amount of
instructional time lost by students due to out of school suspension
and absences related to mental health concerns and 4) Increase the
degree of inter-agency service integration of programs and
coordination of cases served by multiple agencies
Staff Wellness Workout Room
Additionally, a Staff Wellness exercise room has been established
and a "10,000 Steps a Day" Walking Club, under the direction of
our school nurse, Mrs. Tina Johnson, has been implemented to assist
staff with becoming physically and emotionally fit. Pedometers were purchased and distributed to each staff members to encourage walking 10,000 steps or approximately five miles per day. Scroll down to see
our state of the art exercise equipment.
Additionally, the staff receives a monthly newsletter entitled
"Parks Elementary and Middle School Health Beat" which is
written by our school nurse, Mrs. Tina Johnson. This newsletter
encourages staff participation and provides health topics that range
from infection control to weight loss to keeping your heart healthy. Students and parents receive a monthly newsletter entitled
"Nutrition Nuggets" which focuses on healthy eating and ways to
involve the entire family in maintaining a healthy diet.
