TEACHER ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM (TAP)
TAP LEADERSHIP TEAM:
Dr. Alvin Brossette, Shaneika Brown, Misty Chelette, Leanie Fitzgerald,
Stephonie French, Claudine Madison, Debra Wamber, and Brooke Williams.
A NEW BEGINNING:
In 2008-2009, Parks Elementary & Middle School entered into the Teacher
Advancement Program, (TAP) in cooperation with the Louisiana Department
of Education (LDOE).
What is the Teacher Advancement Program
The Milken Family Foundation created the Teacher Advancement Program to attract, retain,
develop and motivate talented people to the teaching profession. The TAP program
has four elements, which includes a Multiple Career Paths, Ongoing Applied Professional
Growth,
Instructionally Focused, and Accountability
Performance-Based
Compensation.
The TAP Program is operated by National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, which is
a public charity.
Five Step Process
The TAP Program has a five step process that is being implemented here at Parks Elementary
& Middle School. These steps include: identifying problems or needs, obtaining
new teacher learning and aligning it to student needs & formatting classroom
applications, developing new teacher learning with support in the classroom,
applying new teacher learning to the classroom, and evaluating the impact on
student performance.
The Six Components of TAP
Additionally, there are six components that address student achievement that are also being
implemented here at Parks Elementary and Middle School. These components include:
school test scores analyzed to drive school/grade improvement plans, Grade Level
Cluster Meetings where teachers meet twice a week, two Master Teachers that
provide direction and support, six Grade-Level Mentors who provide further support,
Leadership Teams that meet weekly to steer TAP/school progress, and new strategies
that are used in classroom to improve student achievement.
Preparing for Success
Two summers ago, the TAP Leadership team attended a week-long training with the
LDOE on "Preparing for Success in a TAP School." Mrs. Susan Crouch, a State
Executive Master Teacher, is assigned to PEMS to work with the Master Teachers
and the administrative team to guide the successful implementation of the TAP
program. There are only two other TAP schools in this area: Mansfield High School
and Desoto Middle School in Desoto Parish. Through\ on-going professional
development, support, and collaboration, we are moving PEMS in a new direction,
one step at a time.
