Supplies included: hard scape, to build the raise beds, chain link fence, to enclose the project, water collection system, to trap water, and top soil.

Recycling Program

Parks Elementary and Middle School eighth grade science/math

class developed a Project Green Sustainable Program to develop

a recycling program that is sustainable and profitable for the Science

program.

STATED PROBLEM:

You are now the project engineer for a The Project Green

Sustainable Program at PEMS. You are approached by Mrs. Lucky, Science Teacher, at PEMS, to design and complete construction

of the project. You have a deadline of one month to draw up and

complete this project. As project engineer, you must work with

Mrs. Lucky to pick the project site and complete the project within

the allotted time.

Main Problem

Mrs. Lucky does not have money to finance the project.  How will

you get it done?

How Seventh and Eighth graders accomplished task!

Students drew up a scaled drawing of the project, estimated

needed materials and resources, figured out how to finance and

how construction would be provided for the project. Donations

of materials were asked from local community partners

and students used math skills to figure out how to square the

chain link fence, raise garden beds, and how much cubic feet of soil

was needed to fill the garden beds.

A Positive for Saturday's Detention

Sixth through eighth grade students completed the labor for this

project on designated Saturdays during Saturday's Detention.

Vermicomposting/Plant Life Cycle

Students compost waste food from the school cafeteria to

fertilize the gardens. Students learned how to grow vegetables

and understood the plant life cycle and was engaged in

vermicomposting to help reduce cafeteria waste and generate

economic resources for the perpetuation of the Green Program.

By using a series of rain barrels and a gravity flow system, a water collection system was devised.

Materials Used

The Vermi-Culture project utilized worms, paper, cardboard, fruit, vegetables, and other organic materials to create vermicast,

nature’s fertilizer.  Worm-recycling bins for organic materials are

also being used for this process.

Cooperative Learning Groups

Students work in three to four cooperative learning groups to

properly care for their worm recyclers.  Students will be in charge of feeding, watering, and harvesting their worms.

Consultants

Students will act as consultants to other classes in future projects.
